Tortilla Recreation Site Camping is a winter campground located just outside of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Only a few miles from Canyon Lake in the Tonto National Forest, Tortilla Campground features 76 single-family campsites. While 30-76 are available for reservations from October through April of each year, campsites 1-29 are permanently closed. All of the sites have views of rugged bluffs, saguaro cactus, and clear desert skies.
Tents, trailers, and RVs up to 32 feet can all be parked in campgrounds. Additionally, each spot has a fire ring, grate, and table. Each site can accommodate up to 10 people and two cars. Drinking water, flush toilets, and a dump station are among the amenities offered by campgrounds. A few miles away at Canyon Lake, there’s also a restaurant, a store, a boat ramp, and a marina.

The campground is located directly across the historic Apache Trail from Tortilla Flat, Arizona, and has a general store and restaurant.

There are numerous opportunities to photograph bighorn sheep, deer, and other desert wildlife in this area, making it a photographer’s paradise.

Travelers who are unprepared to face nature might regard this place as harsh. Summertime conditions are usually high temperatures and little water.

The days are usually pleasant in the winter, but the nights are much colder. Come prepared for anything—even the occasional snowfall or downpour—if you plan on visiting.

The region is abundant in natural beauty, outdoor activities, and human history. The campground is located near the Canyon Lake Apache Trail Scenic Byway, a stagecoach road that was once used by the Apache Tribe. Stories about missing cowboys and gold mining may be told to visitors.

There is plenty of scenery along the way to the campground, including a vista point that is ideal for taking pictures and seeing wildlife. The campground is located next to Canyon Lake, which offers a variety of outdoor activities like boating, fishing, and kayaking.

There’s a good trail system in the Superstition Wilderness, and during the colder months of the year, a lot of people use the western end of the wilderness. Exercise caution, as some trails are not suitable for horses and others have fair to poor conditions.

The campsites are close to one another in this sizable yet compact campground. Every campsite offers a view of the surrounding desert; some even offer views of cliffs and mountain peaks. The facility has sewage hookups and can accommodate RVs.

A picnic table and a cooking grate for a campfire are included with every campsite. A public cellular credit card phone (emergency 911), restaurant, gift shop, and post office are among the amenities located at the end of Tortilla Flat. Two miles to the west is Canyon Lake and Marina, which has picnic and fishing areas, public boat launches, a restaurant, excursion boats, and boat rentals.

Tortilla Recreation Site Camping Fees

$20 per site/night; 50% off (for those over 62 or with a permanent disability) for single camp units only is available to holders of the America the Beautiful Interagency Senior or Access Pass. The camp host uses a portable card reader to collect campground fees; cash is not accepted.

Nearby Attractions

The scenic byway continues 25 miles past Tortilla Flat to the 327-foot Theodore Roosevelt Dam and lake. About 8 miles south of the dam is Tonto National Monument, home to remarkably intact Puebloan cliff dwellings dating from the 13th to the 15th century.

Fish Creek Vista Point is located approximately 7 miles east of AZ-88. It offers fantastic views of the desert and an easily accessible interpretive trail that is excellent for learning about the region’s history.
